A plate of golden fried empanadas with dipping sauces

I went on a hunt for the best international food in Sioux Falls, from Argentinian steaks to Ethiopian coffee and Mexican street tacos. The city's ethnic restaurants were shaped by decades of immigration and resettlement, and several are true hidden gems. I visited all six in person. Here's what I found and what to order.

Tour the World: Ethnic Restaurants in Sioux Falls

  • A grilled porterhouse steak with a small dish of green sauce at Tarquin Argentinian Restaurant

    Tarquin Argentinian Restaurant

    Sioux Falls, SD

Tarquin brings Argentinian cooking to Sioux Falls, and the focus is protein, especially beef. Gabriel Rivero, a known opera singer, opened it in 2020, and it's open every day for dinner only. I'd order the Porterhouse Parrillada or the house-made empanadas, and come hungry, because one meal feeds two.

  • Shelves stocked with packaged goods inside Biftu African Market in Sioux Falls

    Biftu African Market

    301 S Garfield Ave
    Sioux Falls

Biftu is an ethnic grocery store that houses some hidden food gems, with Somali roots and East African flavors. It's friendly and fast-paced with no real sit-down, and the owners make sure customers feel cared for. The dishes are packed with flavor and spice, so if you don't love spice, this may not be the place for you. I'd grab the Goat and Rice or the Sambusa.

  • Ethiopian dishes served with injera on a colorful patterned platter at Shalom Coffee House

    Shalom Coffee House

    1701 E 10th St
    Sioux Falls

Shalom is a hidden Ethiopian gem that has thrived on word of mouth since opening in 2009. Locals rave about the food and the customer service, and the coffee is expertly roasted. I'd order the Key Wot or the Yawaze Tibs, and know that portions run on the smaller side for the price.

  • Storefront of Tortilleria Hernandez in Sioux Falls with glass doors and a green sign

    Tortilleria Hernandez

    101 N Fairfax Ave
    Sioux Falls

Tortilleria Hernandez is a small, family-owned spot that specializes in freshly made tortillas and authentic Mexican street food. The Hernandez family keeps the menu limited so they can focus on quality over quantity, and the service is fast and friendly. I'd order the Street Tacos or the Carne Asada, and bring cash, because it's cash only.

  • A bowl of pho with sliced beef, fresh herbs, bean sprouts and lime at Pho Thai

    Pho Thai

    230 S Phillips Ave
    4001 E 10th St.
    3801 W 34th St
    Sioux Falls, SD

Pho Thai opened its first store front in 2019 and now has three locations in Sioux Falls, serving an authentic mix of Thai, Vietnamese, and Asian fusion. The kitchen leans on noodles, rice paper, lemongrass, chili paste, seafood, and vegetables. I'd start with the Chicken Pho or the Thai Basil & Egg, and the portions are hearty.

  • Storefront of Dar El Salam Market, home of Gyro Time in Sioux Falls, under a blue sky

Gyro Time (Dar El Salam Market)

    1022 N Minnesota Ave.
    Sioux Falls, SD

Gyro Time is tucked inside Dar El Salam Market, and they make their own pita bread on site. Locals rave about the customer service, the quality of the ingredients, and the market itself, and the price is unbeatable. I'd order the Gyro or the Falafel, and it's take out only.
